Top Tips for Maintaining Your Gas Boiler

A well-maintained boiler is key to a warm and safe home. Our guide to boiler maintenance covers simple steps you can take to keep your system running smoothly and efficiently. We’ll also tell you when it’s time to call in a professional for a full service.
Safe homeowner checks
Gas boiler maintenance starts with the appliance's user instructions. Keep the service record and manual available, leave ventilation unobstructed and look for visible leaks or changes in operation without removing covers. Do not open the boiler casing, adjust gas components or attempt electrical repairs.
Where your system has a pressure gauge or display, compare the reading with the guidance for your particular model and operating conditions. Repeated pressure loss or unusual increases need investigation; do not keep adding water or resetting the boiler to mask a fault. Check ordinary thermostat and timer settings against the user instructions before assuming the boiler itself has failed.
Know when professional attention is needed
Arrange professional servicing in line with the manufacturer instructions. HSE advises annual servicing of domestic gas appliances by a Gas Safe registered engineer competent in the relevant work. Keep carbon monoxide alarms maintained according to their instructions; they do not replace appliance maintenance.
New noises, leaks, repeated fault codes, unreliable hot water or heating that no longer responds normally should be discussed with an engineer rather than left until the next planned service. If you suspect the appliance is unsafe, stop using it. For a suspected mains gas leak, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from a safe place; for LPG, contact your supplier's emergency service. Avoid electrical switches and naked flames.
Maintenance and repairs have different purposes
Gas boiler service and maintenance follow the appliance's routine care requirements. Repair work investigates and addresses a fault. A service should not be assumed to include replacement parts or to resolve an existing breakdown; explain symptoms when booking so the scope can be agreed.
What affects gas boiler maintenance cost?
The boiler model, service history, condition and safe access influence the work involved. Diagnosis, replacement parts or additional repairs may be separate from routine maintenance. Ask what the quote includes and how further findings will be discussed rather than assuming one price covers every task.
