Air Con Not Working? Common Problems Explained

Technician testing the electronics of a wall-mounted air conditioning unit

When your air con is not working, it helps to note what has changed before assuming a particular component has failed. This guide covers home air conditioning problems, safe observations and when professional diagnosis is needed. GU Services serves residential properties in Woking and within a five-mile radius.

Air con not switching on

Check the normal controls and user instructions: a timer, selected mode or remote-control batteries may explain why the unit does not respond. Note whether the display or indicator lights operate and whether other equipment has lost power. Some systems delay restarting to protect the equipment, so consult the model instructions rather than repeatedly switching it on and off.

Do not remove electrical covers, bypass controls or repeatedly reset a tripping protective device. If the air conditioner is not working after the permitted user checks, report the symptoms and any fault code. A code helps guide investigation but does not by itself prove which part needs replacement.

Air conditioning running but not cooling

Air con not cooling can involve settings, airflow, installation conditions or a component fault. Check that the controls are set to a supported cooling mode with a suitable target temperature. Fan-only mode circulates air without providing refrigeration, and some multi-split systems have restrictions on different rooms using heating and cooling simultaneously.

Observe whether accessible air inlets or outlets are obstructed by furniture or curtains. If cooling remains poor, do not assume the answer is adding refrigerant: controls, fans, heat exchangers and the refrigerant circuit may need professional assessment. A lower temperature setting cannot repair a fault.

Poor airflow and dirty filters

Filters collect dust and can restrict airflow when dirty. Follow the manufacturer instructions for any permitted user cleaning, including the specified shutdown procedure. Do not open service panels, reach into equipment or use unsuitable cleaning products. For inaccessible filters or uncertainty about the procedure, arrange professional help.

Weak airflow can also involve the fan or other parts of the installation. A visual observation is useful, but it cannot establish the internal cause. Keep the model and service history available when discussing the problem.

Thermostat and control issues

Check ordinary timer, temperature and mode settings against the manual. A room that has reached the set temperature may not need continuous cooling; sensor location and the selected controls affect operation. If settings appear correct but behaviour has changed, describe whether the issue affects one indoor unit or the whole system.

Do not alter control wiring or open the unit to inspect a sensor. Air con troubleshooting at home should stay within the user instructions, not extend to internal tests or repairs.

Water leaks, noises and reduced performance

Water around an indoor unit needs investigation. Condensate normally collects and drains away, but a drainage problem or other fault can cause leakage. Stop using a leaking unit, keep away from wet electrical connections and seek advice; do not attempt to clear internal drains or dismantle the casing.

New rattling, grinding or other unfamiliar sounds should be reported. Some operating sounds are normal, and sound alone cannot confirm a refrigerant leak or failed component. Similarly, increased electricity use or uneven cooling is an observation to discuss, not proof of a particular fault.

A burning smell, repeated electrical tripping or damaged equipment needs professional attention. Stop operation and isolate only if safe, following the user instructions. If there is smoke or fire, move to safety and call the emergency services. Never attempt refrigerant charging, leak repairs or electrical work yourself.

What professional fault investigation involves

The inspection should consider the reported symptoms, controls, accessible equipment and relevant tests before a repair is proposed. Ask for an explanation of the findings, suitable parts, limitations and any further investigation needed. Agree the work and associated costs before proceeding rather than assume every fault can be fixed during the first visit.

A typical home split system has an outdoor compressor and heat exchanger linked to an indoor coil and fan. Some indoor units blow air directly into the room; others use ducts. Problems in several parts of this arrangement can produce similar symptoms, which is why diagnosis matters.

Maintenance, repair or replacement?

For planned care of a home system in Woking or within five miles, explore our air conditioning servicing and discuss the maintenance your equipment needs.

Routine maintenance follows the manufacturer guidance; a repair addresses a fault. Cleaning a permitted user filter does not replace investigation of persistent cooling problems, leaks or electrical concerns. Keep accessible airflow paths clear without approaching moving parts or inaccessible outdoor equipment, and report changes in sounds, smells or operation.

If repair is impractical, consider the system condition, availability of suitable parts and household requirements before deciding on replacement. Our home air conditioning replacement page explains those considerations. Age alone does not establish that replacement is necessary, and neither maintenance nor repairs guarantee that future faults will not occur.
