Engineer working on a domestic boiler in a kitchen

LPG at home

Start with the fuel, appliance and work required.

Liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG, can supply domestic heating and appliances where mains natural gas is not used. The equipment and installation must suit that fuel; LPG and natural gas are not interchangeable.

LPG is included in our domestic gas services. For any enquiry, we need to establish the appliance and task rather than assume one registration covers all gas work. Boiler planning is covered on our boiler installation page; LPG-specific work remains subject to confirmation.

Appliance enquiries

Domestic LPG work with the scope confirmed first.

LPG boilers and home heating
Our existing domestic services include LPG boiler care. Tell us the make and model, whether you need planned servicing or help with a fault, and any recent work. The appliance and proposed task need confirming before an appointment is agreed.
Cookers and other domestic appliances
If your enquiry concerns an LPG cooker or another appliance, share its make, model and installation details. We confirm whether the work falls within the relevant current competence before accepting it; general gas registration does not cover every LPG appliance.
Installation and changes to equipment
Discuss the appliance, its specified fuel and the existing connections before arranging installation. Suitability, instructions, ventilation and flue arrangements need assessment. Do not assume natural gas equipment can be connected to an LPG supply.

Servicing, checks and faults

Explain whether the appliance is working normally.

Routine LPG servicing follows the appliance instructions and applicable checks. Repeated stopping, ignition problems, changes in operation or a fault code may need diagnosis and repair instead. Share the symptoms; do not remove covers, bypass controls or attempt gas or electrical repairs.

For a domestic rental property, our gas safety certificates page explains inspection records and landlord responsibilities. Tell us that the appliances use LPG so the relevant scope and competence can be confirmed. Maintenance and a landlord safety check are distinct tasks.

Fuel and installation safety

LPG is stored under pressure as a liquid, commonly in a tank or cylinders, rather than arriving through the mains natural gas network. Its vapour is heavier than air and can collect in low areas. Storage, supply and appliance arrangements need the appropriate safety assessment.

Discuss tank or fuel-supply responsibilities with your LPG supplier. Do not alter regulators, supply connections or ventilation. HSE's LPG tank guidance covers storage safety and supplier emergency contacts.

If you suspect an LPG leak, leave the affected area and contact your supplier's emergency number from a safe place. Avoid electrical switches, naked flames and other ignition sources. Call 999 if there is immediate danger; do not wait for a response to an enquiry.

Arranging the work

Confirm the task before agreeing the visit.

  • Describe the property and equipment

Share your postcode, appliance details, fuel type and the work needed. Mention whether the LPG supply uses a tank or cylinders and any known concerns, without opening equipment to obtain information.

  • Confirm the scope and competence

We review the enquiry and confirm whether the proposed appliance work can be undertaken. Tank, fuel-delivery and supplier responsibilities should be distinguished from work on a domestic appliance.

  • Assess and agree the work

The appliance and installation are assessed for the proposed task. We discuss service requirements, diagnostic findings or installation changes and the quote before further work proceeds.

  • Complete the agreed checks and records

Work follows the relevant appliance instructions and applicable safety requirements. We explain the findings and appropriate records, including any further action needed or equipment that must not be used.

Scope and cost

What affects an LPG service quote?

Appliance and requested work
Installation, servicing and fault investigation involve different scopes. The appliance model, service information and proposed task help establish what is needed.
Access and installation condition
Access to the appliance, connections and flue, where applicable, and the condition of the existing installation can affect the work. Mention any access restrictions before booking.
Parts and additional work
Repairs, compatible parts or changes identified by assessment may be separate from an inspection or service. Agree what is included and how further work will be discussed.

Residential LPG questions

Do I need an LPG-qualified gas engineer?

The engineer needs current Gas Safe registration covering LPG and the appliance and work concerned. Natural gas competence alone is not enough. Check the relevant entries on the engineer's ID card and confirm the scope before work is arranged.

Can I enquire about an LPG boiler service?

Yes. GU Services lists LPG boiler care within its domestic services. Share the make, model and service history so we can confirm the proposed work and whether any existing fault needs investigation instead of routine servicing.

Can you work on my LPG cooker?

Please provide the make, model, fuel details and work required. Cooker-specific LPG competence must be confirmed before a booking is accepted. This page does not promise support for every appliance type or installation.

Can a natural gas appliance be used with LPG?

Do not assume it can. The appliance must be suitable for the specified fuel and installation. Any manufacturer-permitted conversion needs the appropriate competent professional and cannot be treated as a simple supply change.

Are LPG safety inspections the same as servicing?

No. An inspection records safety findings; servicing concerns appliance maintenance. Explain whether you need a residential landlord inspection, routine service or fault investigation so the appropriate scope and competence can be confirmed.

What should I do if I suspect an LPG leak?

Move away from the affected area and call your LPG supplier's emergency number from a safe place. For a tank supply, the number should be displayed on the tank. Avoid electrical switches and ignition sources. Call 999 if there is immediate danger; do not wait for an enquiry-form reply.
