Installation and replacement
Plan the hot water system, not just the cylinder.
Replacing an existing cylinder or changing the way water is stored starts with understanding the home. Demand, supply, space and the heat source all influence which arrangement is suitable.
Cylinder work is part of our domestic gas and heating services. If the proposal also involves changing the boiler, our boiler installation page explains the wider assessment and planning involved.
Understanding the options
Vented or unvented, direct or indirect.
- Vented cylinders
- A vented cylinder is usually supplied by a cold water storage cistern, often in the loft. The installation relies on its open vent and the available head of water. Replacement needs to suit that arrangement rather than assume any cylinder is interchangeable.
- Unvented and mains-pressure cylinders
- Unvented hot water cylinder installation uses a cylinder supplied from the cold mains, with suitable controls and safety devices. Available pressure and flow must be assessed; fitting a mains-pressure cylinder does not create extra incoming water capacity.
- Direct and indirect heating
- Direct cylinders typically heat water using electric immersion heaters. Indirect cylinders receive heat through a coil connected to an external heat source, such as a boiler, and may also have an immersion heater. These terms describe how water is heated, separately from whether the cylinder is vented or unvented.
Choosing a suitable cylinder
Match capacity and connections to the home.
- Household hot water demand
- Baths, showers, occupancy and simultaneous use help determine suitable storage capacity and reheating arrangements. Discuss current shortfalls and any planned changes to the home.
- Supply, heating and controls
- The incoming water supply, existing plumbing, heat source and electrical connections need review. For indirect hot water cylinder installation, compatibility with the boiler and controls is part of choosing the equipment.
- Space, support and pipe routes
- Cylinder dimensions, filled weight, access for installation and maintenance, and suitable pipe routes affect the proposal. An unvented installation also needs an appropriate route for safety discharge pipework.
Installation and commissioning
From the existing system to checked operation.
Review the existing arrangement
Share your postcode, cylinder details if known and how hot water is currently heated. We assess the supply, demand, connected equipment and available space before discussing options.
Agree the installation scope
Discuss the cylinder, controls, connections and any additional work, including access and making good. Confirm the applicable notification route and how disruption to hot water will be managed before proceeding.
Install and commission
The agreed equipment is installed and commissioned in line with its instructions and applicable requirements. Checks cover the relevant connections, controls, safety arrangements and operation of the completed system.
Explain operation and documentation
We discuss the controls, ongoing maintenance and any findings. Keep the manufacturer instructions, commissioning record and relevant Building Regulations documentation with your property records.
Hot water safety
G3 requirements for unvented systems.
In England, G3 addresses hot water safety, including protection against excessive temperature and pressure. An unvented system needs suitable safety devices and discharge pipework that carries any safety discharge to an appropriate location. Installation requires the necessary competence for this work.
Unvented cylinder installation is normally notifiable building work. Agree the route before work begins: advance notification to building control, or self-certification through a competent person scheme covering this work where the installer is appropriately registered. Approved Document G provides the official guidance. Confirm the commissioning and compliance records to be supplied.
When a cylinder needs attention
Leaks, visible deterioration, recurring faults or insufficient hot water are reasons for assessment. A leaking connection or faulty control does not automatically mean the vessel needs replacing. Replacement may be appropriate where its condition or capacity no longer suits the home.
Report water discharging from safety pipework or unexpected overheating. Do not cap a discharge pipe, alter safety valves, remove electrical covers or work on a hot, pressurised system. Keep clear of escaping hot water and seek professional advice.
If the concern also involves radiators, circulation or heating pipework, our central heating repair service explains investigation of the wider system.
Scope and cost
What affects the installation quote?
- Cylinder specification
- Capacity, heating method and whether the proposal is vented or unvented affect the equipment and work. Direct hot water cylinder installation may have different connection requirements from an indirect system.
- Existing connections and access
- Changes to plumbing, heating controls, electrical connections, support or the installation position can affect the scope. Removal of the old cylinder and any making good should be discussed.
- System changes and safety arrangements
- Converting the existing arrangement may involve more than replacing the vessel. Supply suitability, discharge routing and any additional remedial work influence hot water cylinder installation cost.

Hot water cylinder questions
What is the difference between vented and unvented cylinders?
A vented cylinder is normally supplied by a cold water storage cistern and has an open vent. An unvented cylinder is connected to the mains and needs suitable safety controls. The choice depends on the property, supply and proposed installation.
Will an unvented cylinder improve my hot water pressure?
That depends on the incoming mains pressure and flow and the installation. A cylinder cannot provide water capacity that the supply does not have. Assessment is needed before recommending a conversion.
What is a direct hot water cylinder?
A direct cylinder typically uses electric immersion heaters. An indirect cylinder is heated through a coil connected to a separate heat source, such as a boiler. The available heat source and household demand help establish a suitable arrangement.
What does G3 mean for an unvented installation?
G3 is the hot water safety requirement in the Building Regulations. Approved Document G gives guidance for England, including protection against excessive temperature and pressure and safe discharge. Competence and the appropriate notification route must also be addressed.
Does a leak mean I need a new cylinder?
Not necessarily. Water can escape from connections, valves or the vessel itself. The source and condition need assessment before deciding whether repair or replacement is appropriate. Do not interfere with safety valves or electrical equipment.
What affects unvented hot water cylinder installation cost?
The cylinder, capacity, access, incoming supply, connection changes and discharge arrangements affect the scope. Ask what the quote includes, including removal, commissioning and documentation, rather than compare cylinder prices alone.
